Beyond the Birdcage — advanced care for the bird you love
Your bird's dish is full, the cage is clean, and you've never fed it avocado. So why is it screaming at dawn, plucking its chest, or biting the hand that feeds it? Most bird advice fits on one page. The things that matter most — reading droppings, weighing in grams, moving a seed addict onto a better diet without starving it, and how birds really learn to talk — nobody tells you. This book does.
Beyond the Birdcage
Advanced care for budgies through macaws — health, nutrition, behavior, training, and talking — in 252 pages written for owners who already know the basics.
- The complete 252-page book as a print-ready 6×9 PDF in clear 12.5-point type
- A large-print EPUB for phone, tablet, and Kindle, with a tappable table of contents
- A step-by-step talking method and an eight-week talking plan
- The daily droppings and gram-scale checks that catch illness early
- Converting a seed eater safely, plus the full never-feed list
- Care cards for 14 species, an emergency card, logs, and a troubleshooting guide
I've shared my home with birds for a long time — budgies, cockatiels, conures, a grey with opinions about everything, and a pair of lovebirds who never once agreed with me about bedtime. They taught me more than any book, mostly by refusing to do what the books said they would.
I'm not a veterinarian, and this book says so whenever it matters. It won't replace your avian vet. It will help you notice problems sooner, ask better questions, and give your bird a longer, happier, busier life.
50 chapters. Ten parts. Far beyond the basics.
Know your species, build a safe home, feed for a long life, catch illness early, understand behavior, train with kindness, teach talking — and plan for a bird that may share decades with you.

The honest version
This book is written by an experienced bird keeper, not a veterinarian, and it says so whenever it matters. It isn't a substitute for an avian vet — it's the book that helps you spot problems sooner and get more from every vet visit. You won't find medication doses or home cures for serious illness. Lifespans, weights, and diet proportions are commonly cited ranges, because individual birds vary. And no book can promise your bird will talk; this one gives it the best chance. No affiliate links, no brand endorsements.

Questions I get asked
What exactly arrives after I buy?
Two files, available to download right away: the PDF (252 pages) and the EPUB. They're yours to keep, and you can re-download them any time from your Gumroad library.
Which file should I use?
The EPUB on a phone, tablet, or Kindle, where you can make the text as large as you like (use Amazon's Send to Kindle). The PDF on a computer, or for printing the checklists and logs.
Is it only about parrots?
Mostly — budgies and cockatiels through macaws, because that's what most people keep. Finches, canaries, and doves get their own chapter and care card.
Will my bird learn to talk?
Maybe. It depends on species and the individual bird. Part 7 explains which birds are likeliest to talk and gives a step-by-step method that gives yours the best chance.
Is checkout secure?
Yes. Payment is handled by Gumroad's checkout, and your card details are never shared with us.
Is this a printed book?
No. It's a digital download. You're welcome to print the PDF for your own use.
What is the refund policy?
All sales final — but if a technical problem stops you from opening the file, reply to your receipt and we'll make it right.
Buy a gram scale. Weigh your bird. Start a log.
Weight loss is often the first sign of illness — and almost impossible to see under feathers. It's the single habit most likely to save your bird's life, and it's just the first of the things this book will show you.
